Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer -Rima XIX. Cuando sobre el pecho inclinas...-

Rima XIX. Cuando sobre el pecho inclinas...

Cuando sobre el pecho inclinas
la melancólica frente,
una azucena tronchada
me pareces.
Porque al darte la pureza,
de que es símbolo celeste,
como a ella te hizo Dios
de oro y nieve.

Rhyme XIX. When above your breast you incline...

When above your breast you incline
your melancholy brow,
a cut, white lily
you seem to me.
Because in giving you the purity
of the one who is the heavenly symbol,
as her God made you
of gold and snow.

  1. RHYME XIX. WHEN YOUR UNHAPPY HEAD...

    When your unhappy head
    drops over your chest,
    a chopped-down lily,
    I pray.
    To be granted the purity,
of which it is a celestial symbol,
that God bestowed when making you
    out of gold and snow.

  2. RHYME XIX. WHEN O'ER THY BREAST...

When o'er thy breast thou bendest
    Thy melancholy brow,
    A bruised and broken lily
    Thou seem'st to me.
    For giving thee the purity
    Whose symbol the lily is,
As he made it, so God made thee
    Of gold and snow.

  3. RHYME XIX. WHEN YOU INCLINE YOUR MELANCHOLY BROW...

When you incline your melancholy brow
Upon your swelling breast, you seem to me
    A lily cut before maturity;
For God made an irrevocable vow,
That he would give you that chaste purity
Known as the lily's symbol, and that we
Might fully realize his great intent
And that you might his wisdom represent,
He placed his mark indelible to show
And made you. like the flower, of gold and snow.

    Translated by Jules Renard

  4. RHYME XIX. WHEN THOU INCLINEST...

    When thou inclinest, melancholy,
    Thy head upon the breast,
To me a severed white lily
    Is manifest.
When purity, as the bloom betokens,
    God on thee did bestow,
He made thee as he made the lily -
    Of gold and snow.

    Translated by Young Allison
