Rima IV.
Rhyme IV. Do not say that, exhausted of its treasure...
Do not say that, exhausted of its treasure, there is lack of subject matter to silence poetry; we may not have poets; but there will always be poetry.
As long as the kiss ignites the heart with waves of light, as long as the sun dresses the torn clouds with fire and gold, as long the air carries perfumes and harmonies in its lap, as long there is spring in the world, There will be poetry!
As long as science does not discover the origins of life, and in the sea or in the heaven there is an abyss that cannot be calculated; as long as the always advancing humanity does not know where it's heading; as long as there is a mystery for man, There will be poetry!
As long as we feel that the soul rejoices, without the lips laughing; as long as we can cry without the tears blurring our vision; as long as the heart and the brain continue struggling; as long as there is hope and remembrances, There will be poetry!
As long as there are eyes that reflect the eyes that look at them, as long as the lip responds sighing to the lip that sighs, as long as two confused souls can in a kiss feel themselves, as long as there is a beautiful woman, There will be poetry!

RHYME IV. DO NOT SAY THAT THE TREASURY IS EMPTIED...
Do not say that the treasury is emptied, matters are lacking, the lyre is quieted. Perhaps there shall be no poets; but always there shall be poetry!
While the waves of light upon a kiss still throb in flames: while the sun still dresses the anguish-rent clouds in fire and gold;
while the air in its lap carries perfumes and harmonies; while there may be in the world a spring-time, there shall be poesy!
While the sciences do not achieve the discovery of the fountains of life, and in the sea or in the heavens there be an abyss that resists all calculus;
while all humanity, continuously advancing knows not where goes the road; while there still may be a mystery for man, there shall be poetry!
While one feels that one may laugh in the soul without that one's lips may laugh; while one may cry without that cry beseeching the pupils to cloud;
while the heart and the head continue in struggle; while there may still be hopes and memories, there shall be poetry!
While there may be some eyes still reflecting the eyes that upon them are gazing; while the lips that are sighing respond to the lips that sigh;
while one can still feel in one kiss two souls melting together confusedly; while there yet exists a beautiful woman, there shall be poesy!

RHYME IV. DO NOT SAY THAT...
Do not say that, treasure depleted, subjects lacking, the lyre sits silently: There may not be poets, but always there will be poetry. While waves quiver excitedly at the kiss of light; while the sun paints shameless clouds in fire and gold;
while the air holds in its lap perfumes and harmony; while in the world there is spring, there will be poetry!
While the discoveries of science do not reach the sources of life, and the sea or the sky holds an abyss that resists calculation;
while ever-advancing humanity still doesn't know where it's going; while there is a mystery left for man, there will be poetry!
While we feel joy in the soul without our lips smiling; while we mourn without tears clouding our eyes;
while the heart and the head battle continually; while there are hopes and memories, there will be poetry!
While there are eyes that reflect the eyes that gaze into them; while lips respond sighing to lips that sigh;
while two souls in a kiss can mix confusedly; while one beautiful woman exists, there will be poetry!
Translated by Howard A. Landman

O DO NOT TELL ME...
O, do not tell me, that, its treasure, spent The lyre is mute from lack of argument, We may not always rich in poets be, But never destitute of poesy. While billows are inflamed with blushes bright And tremble to receive the kiss of light; While Phoebus may in majesty behold The scattered clouds of purple fire and gold;
While in its bosom's folds, the atmosphere Rare perfumes and sweet harmonies may bear, While spring exists to fill the heart with glee There will be always, always, poesy.
While science may not, of endeavor rife, Discover the true origins of life; While chasms still remain in sea or sky, Which all our calculations may defy;
And, while humanity in darkness stalks, Advancing, without knowing where is walks, While there is left a single mystery, There will be always, always, poesy.
While we may feel the soul rejoicing, while Our lips do not endorse it with a smile; While we may weep in silent misery Without a single tear to dew the eye;
While heart and head, by adverse forces pricked To useless strife, continue to conflict; While hopes and recollections still may be, There will be always, always, poesy.
While there are eyes, which may reflect the gaze Of other eyes in sympathetic rays; While one lip still with longing may reply Unto another's corresponding sigh;
While two souls may confound in mutual bliss And seal the compact with a fervent kiss; While one fair woman lives for you and me, There will be always, always, poesy.
Translated by Jules Renard

RHYME III. SAY NOT THAT, ITS TREASURE EXHAUSTED...
Say not that, its treasure exhausted, The lyre is mute, lacking a melody; There may be no poets, but forever Poesy will be.
As long as the waves quiver glowingly At dawning's caress; As long as the sun doth, with fire and gold, The flying clouds dress;
As long as the breezes are laden with Fragrance and harmony; As long as the springtide comes to the earth, Poesy will be!
As long as by science the well of life Has not been found, And in seas or in heavens an abys remains That men cannot sound;
While ignorant whither, but forward yet, Goes humanity; As long as one mystery remains for man, Poesy will be!
As long as the soul joys and yet no smile Without doth appear; As long as there's sorrow when from the eye There falls no tear;
As long as mankind is still left with hope And memory; As long as the heart and head battle still, Poesy will be!
As long as eyes mirror the tender gaze Of other eyes; As long as a sighing mouth still responds To a mouth that sighs;
As long as two souls in a kiss can feel One unity; As long as one beautiful woman is ... Poesy will be!
