A través
Across
I turn the page of the day, writing what I'm told by the motion of your eyelashes. I enter you, the truthfulness of the dark. I want proofs of darkness, want to drink the black wine: take my eyes and crush them. A drop of night on your breast's tip: mysteries of the carnation. Closing my eyes I open them inside your eyes. Always awake on its garnet bed: your wet tongue. There are fountains in the garden of your veins. With a mask of blood I cross your thoughts blankly: amnesia guides me to the other side of life.Etiquetas: Octavio Paz |

As one listens to the rain
Listen to me as one listens to the rain, not attentive, not distracted, light footsteps, thin drizzle, water that is air, air that is time, the day is still leaving, the night has yet to arrive, figurations of mist at the turn of the corner, figurations of time at the bend in this pause, listen to me as one listens to the rain, without listening, hear what I say with eyes open inward, asleep with all five senses awake, it's raining, light footsteps, a murmur of syllables, air and water, words with no weight: what we are and are, the days and years, this moment, weightless time and heavy sorrow, listen to me as one listens to the rain, wet asphalt is shining, steam rises and walks away, night unfolds and looks at me, you are you and your body of steam, you and your face of night, you and your hair, unhurried lightning, you cross the street and enter my forehead, footsteps of water across my eyes, listen to me as one listens to the rain, the asphalt's shining, you cross the street, it is the mist, wandering in the night, it is the night, asleep in your bed, it is the surge of waves in your breath, your fingers of water dampen my forehead, your fingers of flame burn my eyes, your fingers of air open eyelids of time, a spring of visions and resurrections, listen to me as one listens to the rain, the years go by, the moments return, do you hear the footsteps in the next room? not here, not there: you hear them in another time that is now, listen to the footsteps of time, inventor of places with no weight, nowhere, listen to the rain running over the terrace, the night is now more night in the grove, lightning has nestled among the leaves, a restless garden adrift-go in, your shadow covers this page.Etiquetas: Octavio Paz |

The bridge
Between now and now, between I am and you are, the word bridge. Entering it you enter yourself: the world connects adn closes like a ring. From one bank to another, there is always a body stretched: a rainbow. I'll sleep beneath its arches.Etiquetas: Octavio Paz |

Por la calle de Galeana
A Ramón Xirau
Along Galeana street
For Ramón Xirau
Hammers pound there above pulverized voices From the top of the afternoon the builders come straight down
We're between blue and good evening here begin vacant lots A pale puddle suddenly blazes the shade of the hummingbird ignites it
Reaching the first houses the summer oxidizes Someone has closed the door......someone speaks with his shadow
It darkens......There's no one in the street now not even this dog scared to walk through it alone One's afraid to close one's eyes

| Octavio Paz -Golden Lotuses - 2 - |
|
Golden Lotuses - 2
Delgada y sinuosa como la cuerda mágica. Rubia y rauda: dardo y milano.
Golden Lotuses - 2
Thin and sinuous as the magic rope. Blonde and impetuous: dart and kite.
But also relentless, an icebreaking ship. A girl's breasts, enameled eyes. She'd danced on all the terraces and in all the boîtes, had watched the sun set over San José, Costa Rica, had slept at the feet of the Himalayas, and in Africa had grown weary of savannahs and bars. At twenty she left her husband for a German woman; at twenty-one she left the German for an Afghan man; at forty-five she lives at Prosperine Court, int. 2, Bombay. Each month, on the ritual days, it rains frogs and snakes on her house, the servants curse the she-demon, and her Parsi lover puts out the fire. Dry storm.
The white vulture pecks at its shadow.

| Octavio Paz -La llama, el habla- |
|
Flame, speech
I read in a poem: to talk is divine. But the gods don't speak: they make and unmake worlds while men do the talking. They play frightening games without words.
The spirit descends, loosening tongues, but doesn't speak words: ¡t speaks fire. Lii by a god, language becomes a prophecy of flames and a tower of smoke and collapse of syllables burned: ash without meaning.
The word of man is the daughter of death. We talk because we are mortal: words are not signs, they are years. Saying what they say, the words we are saying say time: they name us. We are time's names.
The dead are mute but they also say what we are saying. Language is the house of all, hanging over the abyss. To talk is human.

| Octavio Paz -Entre irse y quedarse...- |
|
Between going and staying...
Between going and staying the day wavers, in love with its own transparency.
The circular afternoon is now a bay where the world in stillness rocks.
All is visible and all elusive, all is near and can't be touched.
Paper, book, pencil, glass, rest in the shade of their names.
Time throbbing in my temples repeats the same unchanging syllable of blood.
The light turns the indifferent wall into a ghostly theater of reflections.
I find myself in the middle of an eye, watching myself in its blank stare.
The moment scatters. Motionless, I stay and go: I am a pause.

With a slit tongue and open eyes the nightingale on the ramparts
Eyes of stored-up pain and feathers of blood the nightingale on the ramparts
Feathers of blood and brief dazzle fresh water given birth in the throat the nightingale on the ramparts

The aquatic vibration of space The triangle the arcanum The drop of ink of blood of honey With a rag and a knife The uprushing spring
Springs the Mexican red Turns black
The Indian red springs The arrow stuck on the black altar The angry alphabet Turns black
The lips go black The black of Kali

Objetos y apariciones
A Joseph Cornell
Objects & apparitions
For Joseph Cornell
Hexahedrons of wood and glass, scarcely bigger than a shoebox, with room in them for night and all its lights.
Monuments to every moment, refuse of every moment, used: cages for infinity.
Marbles, buttons, thimbles, dice, pins, stamps, and glass beads: tales of the time.
Memory weaves, unweaves the echoes: in the four corners of the box shadowless ladies play at hide-and-seek.
Fire buried in the mirror, water sleeping in the agate: solos of Jenny Colonne and Jenny Lind.
"One has to commit a painting," said Degas, "the way one commits a crime." But you constructed boxes where things hurry away from their names.
Slot machine of visions, condensation flask for conversations, hotel of crickets and constellations.
Minimal, incoherent fragments the opposite of History, creator of ruins, out of your ruins you have made creations.
Theater of the spirits: objects putting the laws of identity through hoops.
"Grand Hotel de la Couronne": in a vial, the three of clubs and, very surprised, Thumbelina in gardens of reflection.
A comb is a harp strummed by the glance of a little girl born dumb.
The reflector of the inner eye scatters the spectacle: God all alone above an extinct world.
The apparitions are manifest, their bodies weigh less than light, lasting as long as this phrase lasts.
Joseph Cornell: inside your boxes my words became visible for a moment.

Ustica
Tú estás a mi costado.
Ustica
The successive suns of summer, The succession of the sun and of its summers, All the suns, The sole, the sol of sols Now become Obstinate and tawny bone, Darkness-before-the-storm Of matter cooled.
Fist of stone, Pine-cone of lava, Ossuary, Not earth Nor island either, Rock off a rock-face, Hard peach, Sun-drop petrified.
Through the nights one hears The breathing of cisterns, The panting of fresh water Troubled by the sea. The hour is late and the light, greening. The obscure body of the wine Asleep in jars Is a darker and cooler sun.
Here the roses of the depths Is a candelabrum of pinkish veins Kindled on the sea-bed. Ashore, the sun extinguishes it, Pale, chalky lace As if desire were worked by death.
Cliffs the colour of sulphur, High austere stones. You are beside me. Your thoughts are black and golden. To extend a hand Is to gather a cluster of truths intact. Below, between sparkling rocks Goes and comes A sea full of arms. Vertigoes. The light hurls itself headlong. I looked you in the face, I saw into the abyss: Mortality is transparency.
Ossuary: paradise: Our roots, knotted In sex, in the undone mouth Of the buried Mother. Incestuous trees That maintain A garden on the dead's domain.

Nightfall
What sustains it, Half-open, the clarity of nightfall, The light let loose in the gardens?
All the branches, Conquered by the weight of birds, Lean toward the darkness.
Pure, self-absorbed moments Still gleam On the fences.
Receiving night, The groves become Hushed fountains.
A bird falls, The grass grows dark, Edges blur, lime is black, The world is less credible.

The bird
A silence of air, light and sky. In this transparent silence Day was resting: The transparency of space Was silence's transparency. Motionless light of the sky was soothing The growth of the grass. Small things of earth, among the stones. Time sated itself in the minute. And in the absorbed stillness Noonday consumed itself.
And a bird sang, slender arrow. The sky shivered a wounded silver breast, The leaves moved, And grass awoke. And I knew that death was an arrow Let fly from unknown hand And in a flicker of an eye we die.Etiquetas: Octavio Paz |

Lightning at rest
Sprawled out, Stone made of the noon-hour, Half-open eyes in which the whitness becomes blue, Half-ready smile. Your body rouses and you shake your lion's mane. Again, you lay down, A fine striation of lava in the rock, A ray of light sleeps. While you sleep I stoke you and polish you, Slim axe, Arrow with I set the night on fire.
The sea fighting in the distance with its swords and feathers.Etiquetas: Octavio Paz |
